British Airways has scooped several gongs at a prestigious travel-site awards, including Best Premium Economy Seat and Service, Best UK Airport Lounge (Airline), and Best Airline or Rail Loyalty Scheme.

The UK flag carrier received the accolades at the Head for Points Travel & Loyalty Awards, with the winners announced at an industry dinner at The Crypt by Bleeding Heart in London. It was hosted by Sky News’ Jonathan Samuels and attended by representatives of the nominated airlines, hotel groups, airport lounges and travel rewards credit cards.

Over 6,000 readers of Head for Points cast their votes for the awards in recognition of ‘the best services that the UK has to offer for the business and premium leisure traveller’.

British Airways was praised by Head for Points for investing in its premium economy cabin (‘World Traveller Plus’). It said: ‘British Airways has been investing its World Traveller Plus experience significantly over the past five years, and this win goes to show it has all paid off.

‘Upgraded meals, blankets, pillows and amenity kits mean the cabin is now a real step up from economy, whilst – finally! – the launch of dedicated check-in and baggage-drop desks at airports seems to have given it the edge compared to our last awards.’

British Airways won Best Premium Economy Seat and Service. BA was praised by Head for Points for investing in the cabin (‘World Traveller Plus’). It said: ‘British Airways has been investing its World Traveller Plus experience significantly over the past five years, and this win goes to show it has all paid off’

The Best Business Class Seat and Service gong went to Qatar Airlines and its ‘Qsuite’.

Head for Points said: ‘From the unique Qsuite with privacy door and on-demand a la carte dining, and touch-screen entertainment inflight info, to comfortable loungewear, Diptyque amenities and highly attentive service, it’s no wonder Qatar Airways is the winner in this category.’

BA’s lounge award came courtesy of the BA Concorde Room at Heathrow Terminal 5.

Head for Points said: ‘The Concorde Room – exclusively for ticketed First Class passengers departing from Heathrow Terminal 5 – shows that British Airways can do good quality table service lounge food and premium drinks. Let’s see it rolled out to the Gold and Business Class lounges too!’

The BA loyalty scheme award, meanwhile, was thanks to the airline’s Executive Club, with Head for Points commenting: ‘It’s unsurprising that readers of a UK-focused frequent flyer site would choose British Airways Executive Club as their preferred programme. However, whilst it’s easy to be annoyed by high surcharges and wobbly IT, you have to admire industry-leading innovations such as guaranteed Avios seats on every flight, the new “all Avios” flights, and 2-4-1 voucher offered on the BA Amex credit card.’

The Best UK Airport Lounge (Independent) went to the American Express Centurion Lounge (Terminal 3).

Head for Points said: ‘The first Centurion Lounge to open in Europe – accessible at Heathrow Terminal 3 to anyone with an American Express Platinum or Centurion card – is a remarkable example of what good design can do with a windowless space. A variety of seating “zones” means that there is something to suit every sort of trip and traveller.’

Doha, Qatar – Qatar Airways has introduced an in-house application that enables Cabin Crew to deliver personalised experiences to passengers. In its initial phase, the application offers real-time insights on flight information, and customer and service information. This allows Cabin Crew to view passengers’ profiles, including privilege club members and oneworld members, as well as all special service requests and preferences for a more personalised and integrated journey with the award-winning airline. The application also empowers Cabin Crew by providing access to up to date digital training materials.

In the coming months, Qatar Airways will have reached the first milestone in this phase of digital transformation by providing Cabin Crew with more than 15,000 mobile devices. The airline will complete the roll-out of the new project in multiple stages, with plans to expand its scope to Hamad International Airport and overseas airports and lounges, integrating passengers’ unique itinerary and requirements across all touch-points.

Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr Badr Mohammed Al Meer, said: “We, at Qatar Airways, are incredibly excited to introduce a new phase in the airline’s digital transformation, especially one that will enhance our world-class onboard experience. As leaders in industry innovation and digital adoption, Qatar Airways excels in identifying and responding to emerging trends for the comfort and convenience of our passengers and this project is a defining step towards a more connected and insightful interaction between our customers and staff.”

By embracing digital solutions, the airline is not only streamlining processes but is also demonstrating a commitment to reducing paper waste and taking a step towards more sustainable ways of working.

Qatar Airways has taken major strides in its digital transformation this year, including its collaboration with Google Cloud to explore data analytics and artificial intelligence solutions for enhanced customer experiences and sustainability.

An aviation YouTuber who posted a negative review of Qatar Airways over its “outdated planes, dirty cabins” and “unmotivated” crew said he was barred from flying with the airline ever again because of the video.

Josh Cahill, who boasts more than 650,000 subscribers on YouTube, shared a video titled “THE SHOCKING DECLINE OF QATAR AIRWAYS” in August, which he described as “a comprehensive flight review.”

After the 13-minute video — which took issue with everything from the welcome-aboard greeting to the seating arrangement, entertainment options and food — Cahill posted a follow-up video on Dec. 16 claiming that Qatar asked him to take the video down, offering him a free flight if he complied.

Cahill said he refused, and Qatar Airways attempted to compromise by asking that he remove any negative comments posted on his video.

When he denied their request a second time, the Doha-based airline sent an email to Cahill informing him that it had canceled a future booking he had on a Qatar Airways flight and banned him from ever traveling with the airline again.

“The flight was booked before I was banned and posted the video,” Cahill told The Post. “For safety reasons I wouldn’t fly Qatar anymore even if they unban me because I’d most likely get arrested in Doha. However the whole ‘unban’ movement is to set an example that airlines shouldn’t get away with censoring flight reviewers.”

The email obtained by Business Insider cited the airline’s “conditions of carriage,” which give Qatar broad discretion to refuse service to passengers.

Cahill said in the video that he received an email from a staff member on the flight he filmed, saying she had not given him permission to record her.

She also told the YouTuber — who blurred any faces that appeared in the review video besides his own — that she feared she would be fired if she didn’t send that email.

Cahill told Insider that he hasn’t been in contact with anyone from Qatar Airways since his December video, but was “surprised by Qatar’s drastic response.”

“In 10 years of reviewing airlines I have never been banned from any airline, nor has any of them ever offered me a free flight in return to delete the negative review,” he added. “That was indeed a first-timer.”

The Post has sought comment from Cahill and Qatar Airways.

In his review of the airline, Cahill walked through his entire experience, starting with boarding.

Air travel has long been considered one of the safest modes of transportation, with rigorous safety standards and protocols in place. However, for some individuals, the fear of flying can still be a significant obstacle. To alleviate these concerns, it’s crucial to choose airlines with impeccable safety records.

In 2023, several airlines around the world have emerged as the safest options for travelers. Let’s delve into the Top 20 safest airlines in the world, as ranked by Airline Rankings, and explore the criteria used to determine their safety.

What makes an airline safe?

Determining the safety of an airline involves a complex analysis of multiple factors. According to Geoffrey Thomas the editor-in-chief for Airline Rankings, their editors employ a comprehensive methodology. They analyze:

  • Crashes in the last 5 years: The number of crashes an airline has experienced over the past five years is a crucial indicator of its safety performance. Few or no crashes demonstrate a commitment to safety.
  • Serious incidents within a two-year period: While crashes are the most severe safety events, serious incidents like engine failures, emergency landings, or near-miss situations also play a role in assessing an airline’s safety.
  • Inspections conducted by aviation regulatory authorities: Regulatory agencies and industry associations conduct regular audits to assess an airline’s adherence to safety standards and procedures.
  • Fleet age: Older aircraft may have more wear and tear, increasing the risk of mechanical failures. A young fleet is often seen as a safety advantage.
  • Assessment of pilot training: Well-trained and experienced pilots are a cornerstone of flight safety. Airlines with rigorous pilot training programs score higher in safety assessments.
  • COVID protocols: In the post-pandemic world, airlines’ response to health and safety measures is also a significant consideration.
